How to Play Pac-Man: Controls, Strategy, and Beginner Tips

Beginner playing Pac-Man showing controls, dots, and ghost positions

Pac-Man looks like a panic simulator the first time you play it: four enemies chasing you down narrow corridors, dots everywhere, no clear strategy. Once you learn the four ghost behaviors and a few timing rules, it becomes one of the most satisfying strategy games of the 1980s. Here's how to start.

The basics

Move Pac-Man through the maze using arrow keys (desktop) or swipes (mobile). Eat every dot to clear the level. Avoid the four ghosts. Eat power pellets to temporarily make ghosts vulnerable — touch a blue ghost and it goes back to the ghost house, while you collect points.

Each level uses the same maze in the original arcade game. What changes is ghost speed, pellet duration, and which fruit appears for bonus points.

Learn the four ghosts

This is the single most important thing to understand: each ghost has its own AI behavior.

For a full breakdown of how each ghost makes decisions, read How Pac-Man Actually Works.

Power pellet strategy

The four flashing dots in the corners turn ghosts blue. Each ghost you eat during one power pellet's effect doubles in value:

That's 3,000 points for chaining all four on one pellet versus 800 for spreading them out. Wait until at least 2–3 ghosts are nearby before eating a pellet.
