How Many Levels Does Pac-Man 30th Anniversary Have?

Level counter for Google Pac-Man 30th Anniversary

The Google Pac-Man Doodle from 2010 — the 30th anniversary version — has 256 levels total. The 256th is the famous kill screen, a programming bug from the original 1980 arcade game that the Doodle faithfully reproduces.

Why 256 specifically

The original Pac-Man arcade game stores the level number in a single byte (8 bits), which holds values 0–255. When the level counter tries to increment past 255, it overflows. The same overflow corrupts the rendering of level 256 — the right half of the screen displays garbled symbols pulled from random memory.

You can play the left half normally, but you can't collect the dots on the right, so the level can't be cleared. This is the kill screen.

Reaching it on the Doodle

Practically nobody reaches level 256 in a single sitting. Doing so requires hours of perfect play. The verified perfect-game time is around 6 hours. Most players quit somewhere between level 5 and 20.

What about practical play

For most people, 'how many levels' is the wrong question. The right question is: how long can I play before the ghosts catch me? Read How to Play Pac-Man for the strategies that actually let you survive past level 5.
