The Highest Score in Pac-Man 30th Anniversary
The theoretical maximum score in Pac-Man is 3,333,360 points. It's called a perfect game and requires clearing every level through 255 without dying, eating every available ghost on every power pellet, and collecting every fruit. The 30th anniversary Doodle uses the same rules.
Why 3,333,360 specifically
The score is the sum of every possible point source across 255 playable levels:
- 240 dots per level × 10 points = 2,400 per level
- 4 power pellets × 50 points = 200 per level
- 4 ghosts × (200+400+800+1,600) = 3,000 per power pellet, × 4 pellets = 12,000 per level (early levels)
- 2 fruits per level (varying value, capping at 5,000 keys from level 13+)
Sum it across all 255 levels and you get 3,333,360.
Who has done it
Billy Mitchell claimed the first perfect game in 1999. His Donkey Kong records were stripped in 2018 amid allegations of emulator use; his Pac-Man records were placed under review. David Race is the current undisputed perfect-game holder. Fewer than 10 verified players have ever achieved it.
How long it takes
A verified perfect game takes around 6 hours of continuous, flawless play. There's no pausing in the official competitive rules. The mental discipline required is closer to chess marathons than to typical gaming sessions.
Realistic goals for the rest of us
For most players, hitting 50,000 points is a strong session. 100,000 is excellent. 500,000 puts you in the top 1% of casual players. Don't compare yourself to perfect-game holders — that's a different sport.
