Why Is Ms. Pac-Man on Google Maps? The Story Behind the Easter Egg

Ms Pac-Man playing on Google Maps street view

Google added a Ms. Pac-Man Easter egg to Google Maps on March 31, 2015 — an April Fools' release. Click a button and any city street grid became a playable Ms. Pac-Man maze. It was one of the most successful Google April Fools' jokes ever.

Why Ms. Pac-Man, not Pac-Man

Bandai Namco's licensing situation for Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man is complicated (see our history page for the full saga). Ms. Pac-Man was the version Google was able to license at the time. The four-maze-rotation design of Ms. Pac-Man also worked better with the variable shapes of real-world street grids.

How it worked technically

Google's engineers built a system that detected street layouts in the visible map area and converted them into Pac-Man-style mazes. The dots, ghosts, and Pac-Man character were overlaid on the actual map. You could 'play' Times Square or your hometown.

Why they took it down

The Easter egg was always intended as a temporary promotion. Google quietly removed it after a few weeks. Ten years later, no equivalent has been launched.
