How to Beat Pac-Man: Patterns, Tips, and the Kill Screen
Beating Pac-Man doesn't mean what you think. The original 1980 arcade game has no ending — it just gets faster forever. The closest thing to 'beating' it is reaching level 256, where a programming bug renders the right half of the screen as garbled symbols and the level becomes uncompletable. That's the famous kill screen.
What 'beating' Pac-Man actually means
Reaching the level 256 kill screen with the maximum possible score — 3,333,360 points — is called a perfect game. It requires clearing every level through 255 without losing a single life, eating every available ghost on every power pellet, and grabbing every piece of fruit.
Billy Mitchell achieved this in 1999. The record has been contested for years (see our history page for the full story). David Race is the current undisputed leader.
The pattern-based approach
Because Blinky and Pinky's AI is fully deterministic, expert players use patterns — memorized move sequences that, executed precisely from a known starting state, clear a level identically every time.
The most famous is the first-board pattern. Practice it on Classic Pac until you can execute it without thinking.
When patterns stop working
From around level 17, the power pellets no longer affect the ghosts at all. From level 20, the ghosts move at full speed and your margin shrinks dramatically. Pattern-based play becomes less reliable; you have to read the ghosts in real time.
Score-maximizing tactics
- Always chain all four ghosts on every power pellet — worth 3,000 points instead of 800.
- Eat both fruits per level. From level 13 onwards the fruit is a key worth 5,000 points each.
- Don't lose a life — bonus lives are usually awarded at 10,000 points and one extra at higher milestones. Losing those compounding lives hurts the final score.
The kill screen explained
Pac-Man uses a single byte to store the level number. A byte holds values 0–255. When you complete level 255 and the game tries to load level 256, the counter overflows. The same overflow corrupts the level rendering: the left half displays normally, the right half is a mess of garbled characters pulled from random memory.
You can play the left half but can't collect dots on the right, so the level can't be cleared. Reach the kill screen and you've effectively 'beaten' the game.
